Family of Origin Coaching Groups

We run a variety of Family of Origin (FOO) coaching groups including:

The Therapist's Own Family

Family of Origin Coaching assists the therapist to be a researcher in their own family of origin system and to identify their role in the pattern of relationships. Researching the pattern of triangles and the key themes and roles in the family forms the foundation for planning specific interventions with one's own family members.

The goal is to define self more clearly in the emotional dynamics of the system which in turn enhances a person's ability to relate non- reactively in other relationship systems including the therapeutic relationship. Therapists can then consider how this impacts upon their role as therapist with clients or as a supervisor of other therapists.

One of the premises for this work is that therapists can only take their clients as far in their self definition efforts as the therapist has been able to take themselves.

Individuals or groups of up to 6 therapists can work together with a faculty member to explore their own family system and plan efforts to define themselves in a more differentiated manner. Individual therapists may focus on a specific issue in their relationships which will be viewed both in the current and previous generational context.

Strict codes of confidentiality apply.

Family of Origin (Year One)

The focus of this group will be on researching your own family emotional system in order to better understand your functional role, triangle position and the potential triggers of chronic anxiety.

Participation in this group can stand alone or it may be a helpful precursor to some individual family of origin coaching. It is not the purpose of the group to re-enter the family system or to redefine self. The reason for this is directed by the theory that suggests any change efforts are more helpfully planned and directed following the acquisition of a sound knowledge of the emotional system. It may well be possible for us to consider efforts to redefine self down the track if the group remains consistent and wishes to continue into the next year. However, this would need to be further discussed and considered at a later stage, following the experience of the group.

Having completed year 1 of Family of Origin research, this continuation group is designed for those who wish to progress and extend their efforts in understanding their own Family of Origin emotional system and begin to take some steps toward defining a more solid and authentic self in relation to family members.

This work is based on a conscious and deliberate effort which includes a number of interlinked tasks: becoming a better observer of self and others in the system, understanding one’s own position within the primary triangles and controlling one’s own emotional reactivity and developing the ability to take thoughtful action and an "I position" amidst the intensity of emotional issues.
