On Healthy Family Systems:

“Being calm is not as important as being a self.”

“The ability to manage the intensity of relationship demands, while managing one’s own functioning, is a biological as well as a relationship process.”

“Any good applied science will be comprehensible." "Togetherness and Individuality are built into neurobiology"

“Feelings are suspect as an indicator of anxiousness. When anxiety is high physiologically, feelings go off-line.”

"When threat is perceived by the individual in their relationships they may move into the well know anxiety responses which are expressed both biologically and relationally: "fight" = conflict, "flight" = avoidance; or the "freeze" = which is from the neurological old vagal system that produces a shut down, as with a hibernation state."

“The family starts and stops the reactivity clock. An immediate response to stress is not enough for symptom development; it’s about sustained reactivity, the timing and duration of reactions.”

“Physiological reactivity is ordinary and natural, like oxygen; the key is to see how it plays out and whether we can see it.”

"There is more going on IN BETWEEN than within."

Differentiation of self is the meat and potatoes of managing reactivity. Mediation and prayer retreats, if unhinged from family work, can make it difficult to recognise anxiousness in daily life.”

Founder & director of the Center for the Study of Natural Systems and the Family. Houston, Texas & Faculty member of the Bowen Center Washington DC. . Victoria Harrison was one of the early family systems therapists to include biofeedback in her practice. She has been a certified trainer and supervisor with the Biofeedback Institute of America for many years.

In recent correspondence from our speaker she writes: "The use of biofeedback & neurofeedback expands clinical practice in such interesting directions - I’m currently working with such interesting and challenging families around symptoms in the child. I look forward to sharing developments in bio and Neurofeedback and its link to differentiation of self, with professionals in Australia."

How managing stress and relationships can optimize overall physical and mental health

Thurs June 24th 7:30pm-9pm

Victoria Harrison will discuss facts about the physiology of relationships and of self that help one understand and manage the impact of stress on physical and mental health.  This presentation may be useful for those who are dealing with health problems in their own life and family as well as for those who wish to help others do so.

  • The physiology of relationships and of self that help one understand and manage the impact of stress on physical and mental health.
  • Case examples of relational and biological self observation in improving life functioning.
  • Using the study of endometriosis and fertility problems to see the connections with stress and relationships.

A conference follow-up for those who attend the 2 days of the conference enabling an extra layer of practical application.

"The goal is to make a research project out of life" Murray Bowen

Particular emphasis will be given to the uses of Ms Harrison's publication My Family My Self: A Journal of Discovery as well as bio-neuro-feedback tools.

Participants who attend this Clinical Seminar will be able to:

  1. Identify reactions associated with anxiety reactions & with "self" in oneself and in the family system
  2. Recognize the importance of a "systems view" of anxiety compared to other theoretical approaches, ie. behavioral observations or psychiatric diagnosis
  3. Examine tools for better observing including the Journal, My Family My Self
  4. Practice exercises that interrupt anxious reactions and produce a shift to "self"
  5. Identify the importance of observing and managing anxiety as part of "Steps Toward Differentiation of Self"
  6. Observe & discuss benefits of steps toward differentiation of self in clinical examples
  7. Experience a demonstration of neurofeedback and discuss the part that observing and changing brain states can play in differentiation of self.
