The Young Adult and the Family System

This 1 day workshop considers a Bowen Family Systems perspective on the young adults (21-35) who have left home and are trying to make their way in the world. Dr McKnight will discuss how profoundly they are affected by their family of origin, and how the relationship systems from which they came can affect their ability to accomplish the tasks of their lives--work, careers, education, finding life partners etc. She has presented on this topic at universities and colleges in the Washington DC area as well as at clinical conferences.

A Theory and Discussion Group on Bowen Theory and Gender and Culture

This series of 3 x 1 1/2 hour meetings provides a useful forum for teasing out the distinctions between emotional processes and societal processes.

A series of articles will be used to encourage some thinking and discussion on how the emotional process attached to gender and culture issues may get in the way of understanding Bowen's Family Systems concepts.

The discussion groups would be of value to any professional who is working with people and who is interested in deepening their understanding of Bowen Family Systems Theory.

Group size: 5 - 8 participants (8 maximum)

Differentiation in Leadership

This workshop is specifically geared to those in a managerial or co-ordination roles.

It explores the common dynamics of work systems under stress, and helps the manager to identify their role in the emotional process.

Bowen as director of the Georgetown Family Centre believed that if there were problems in the dynamics of the workplace, he needed to consider his own part in the system and define himself in a more differentiated way. His focus was always on changing self not others.
